Postcard 01 (Barcelona)
Can you recall when we watched EVOL’s performance at Cafe Oto on YouTube? Even though our jaws were dropping, you managed to say something about Hölderlin and his crazy visions regarding the rhythm of art and life. I just sat there and thought, “Wow! Totale Gegenwart!” We agreed that what Roc Jiménez de Cisneros and Stephen Sharp have been producing under the project name EVOL since the late 1990s is not only algorithmic rave nostalgia, but it’s also the auditory essence of beautiful memories of strobe nights that never took place. How archaic and brutally palpable non-analogue sound production can be only becomes clear when you experience it live, with its almost unbearable and wonderful digital monotony. That’s why I was also so pissed off when you invited EVOL to Basel and didn’t let me know. I hope that, one day in Hamburg, I will finally be able to arm myself with whistles and slide into their wall of sound.
